Airline pilots, why do you "gargle" the mic?

You know who you are. You barely articulate, as if you have partial paralysis of tongue and vocal cords. As a pax this concerns me a bit. Are you bored and sleepy up there on the flight deck? Is it a sort of 'trademark' of a pro pilot?
